If anyone is keeping score on the dueling movies based on the H.G. Wells classic "The War of the Worlds," score another one for the independent version.

Pendragon Pictures, which is producing an independent version of "The War of the Worlds," will have production maquettes featured in a year-long exhibit at the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle.

Besides maquettes from the indie film, the display also will feature dozens of book editions, radio, film and state adaptations of the novel which features Martians invading the Earth before dying from our bacteria. It also will include original illustrations for the 1906 le Vandamme edition of the novel created by Brazilian artist Alvim Correa, the first time these illustrations will be on display in the United States.

Maquettes are small models of sets and scenes normally used along with storyboards to help production crews get a feel for the film. Pendragon Films finished filming their project, set in the 19th century, earlier this year. Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise are working together on a modern adaptation of the novel, which recently just begun principal photography. Both movies are expected to be released before next summer.

The Spielberg version of the film will not be included in the exhibit, outside of a mention, because filming just started, and were not able to offer something from the film, according to a press release from Pendragon.

The museum was created by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. Allen also is an owner of SpaceShipOne, which recently landed the $10 million X-Prize for being the first private aircraft to enter space.

"Paul Allen has been very generous in inviting us to be part of this exhibit," said film director Timothy Hines in a release.

Susan Goforth, a producer on the film, said that when the Pendragon release of the film comes out in the spring, an actual miniature of the Martian Fighting Machines will be added to the Seattle museum exhibit.
